I took a standardized test at 2:00pm today. The last time I took a standardized test was probably 3 years ago – which I realize for most people is still a pretty short time ago. You see, I was taking a machinery and equipment valuation exam. (Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?) And here’s how I did it:
I started studying a few days in advance, then I forgot to keep studying, and then I crammed the day before the exam.
When I arrived to the exam, I sat down and pulled out my number 2 pencil (which was mandatory) and a black ballpoint pen. I wrote my name on the exam booklet and then I opened it to begin. I worked my way through the entire test using the black ballpoint pen (because I would always rather work in pen). I only use a calculator if absolutely necessary (long division doesn’t count as absolutely necessary). I also prefer to do math using fractions. I circled a letter and then wrote the letter I chose to the left of the question. If I was unsure of my answer I put a question mark to the left of the letter I chose so I would know to look at it again later. I powered all the way through the exam. Then I filled in all of the bubbles, page by page, using my number two pencil. I double checked my bubbles a page at a time. Then I handed in the booklet. I finished the exam 3rd out of 4 people.
Also, I never discuss an exam after it’s over. It’s done, it no longer matters.
However, I did always wish that I had the nerve to look at the exam again because it would have made studying for midterms and finals much easier.
How do you take standardized tests? Do you study right beforehand? Do you use pencil or pen? Do you have a lucky charm you take with you? Do you use a calculator? Do you fill in all the bubbles as you go? Do you always finish first? Do you always finish last? What about the answers – do you discuss them before leaving the room?
