Hello, 2014

Well, it’s 2014. Since we’ve last spoken for real – I got my hair highlighted again, Christmas Eve dinner has happened, Christmas Day has happened, I celebrated one of my favorite birthdays to date, I talked Tory into traveling to Louisiana for New Year’s, I wrote over 120 Christmas and New Year’s cards, I got a fever and really bad sore throat, I bought a snow shovel (finally), and I made a compost bin.

Right now I want to take some time to focus on going forward; there’s plenty of time for reminiscing later (and plenty of pictures to go with it – minus the sick part). I’m still working on choosing what my word for 2014 is going to be. I have, however, decided that whatever word I choose I will be painting on my wall. The word I choose needs to be a combination of finding some inner strength, not being afraid to dive into things with my entire heart, and making sure never to hold back. That’s a lot for one little word.

In 2013 I had 25 goals. 25 goals to celebrate the coming of my 25th year in 2013. This year, I’m scaling back a little bit and I’m aiming for 20 that are more concrete, and we’ll see what other trouble fun I can get into along the way.

Some of these are pretty obvious, and some of these need a little bit more of a backstory.

There are a lot of places on my travel list for this year that I’ve divided in 2 categories. The must-travel-to places are Boston, DC, Austin, and Los Angeles. The would-like-to-travel places are Portland, Orlando, Arizona, Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, and San Francisco. I would also really like to do another big trip this year – to either Europe or Australia. I’m still working on talking someone into coming with me.

This year I tried to get it together to record a Christmas song so that I could put it on my Christmas mix, but it didn’t happen this year. Luckily, I now have another whole year to choose a song. I’m open to suggestions.

Yes, a boudoir session is on the list. (Sorry, mom.) I’m 25. Now’s the time to do it.

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to make a weekly goal. Summer is such a laid back time and the weather is so beautiful that anything can become an awesome experience. Every week this summer I want to photograph a friend. Confession: I have no idea how to execute a photo shoot, so whoever is first, God bless.
(Maybe I can talk Carly into it?)

This past year I tried to send people stickers for their birthday instead of making cards. I thought it would be so much easier. Stickers are already made, they can be personalized. Then I realized that getting to the store, buying stickers, sending them out, and paying (usually more than the cost of the stickers) to send them out was incredibly inefficient. I considered pre-printing post cards, but I received two homemade Christmas cards this year that I was so in love with that I wanted to help other people experience that as well. Plus, it’ll mean more cards to blog about. Win/win.

I want to create a real-life inspiration board this year to make a big collage. (Remember life before Pinterest?) Any quote or picture that inspires me will be added to the pile and I’m going to hang it under my word of 2014.

I think I want green eyes for a month. Yes, this sounds crazy. But why not?

Every time I try to clean out my closet there are always a few items that I think, well surely I’m going to wear that soon, and years go by and it never happens. Well, this year, I turned all of the hangers in my closet around January 1. As I wear things, I will turn the hangers around the correct way. At the end of the year I’m going to go through everything that has not been worn and get rid of it. Unless I have a very good reason. I’m probably going to need someone to stand over my shoulder while I do this part.

So that’s the list. Time to hop to it.

Let me leave you with one more thing, the song that is going to be the inspiration for my year. A new friend sent it my way saying that it reminded him of me, and you know what, I’m absolutely flattered.
