I recently went to a dance with my friend Chris.

The dance was 1920′s themed and I was SO excited about it. I know I don’t look uber flapper-ish, but I had had a really long day – and there are pearls in my hair that you just can’t see. However, I still had a great time – I just wish they played better music… the song that they played that was the oldest must have been from the 1950s – and that was only one song. Sad story. However, the committee did a really great job putting the favors together, so check it out. Pearls for the ladies, cards for the gentlemen. Such a good use of a mason jar. AND Chris let me take them both home. Awesome.

brunch with crepes

Over “winter break” I had some of my good friends over for brunch one day.  And I am proud to say – I have FINALLY started learning how much food is the right amount of food to make for these events.  For eight people I made a 9″x13″ egg stratta, blueberry muffins, 2-3 crepes each and I had bought cookies for dessert.  The only thing I had wish I had done differently was NOT make sangria – which we didn’t even touch.  But how was I supposed to know that everybody had gone out the night before?

In addition to spending some time preparing the food, I decided it would be nice for me to create name tags since some of the people knew each other better than others and I wanted to make sure that the breakfast chat didn’t get awkward – I also decided that these particular name tags could double as awesome bookmarks – although I’m not 100% sure I ever relayed that to the guests (but I still have them if anybody wants theirs).

The trickiest part of the entire brunch was trying to master making Crepe Suzettes – which my mother ASSURED me was easy.  I’ve got to tell you, I don’t think I did it quite right – I think I actually doubled the sugar by accident, but hey, they still tasted good – and just more like caramel than grand marnier.  Oh well…

PS.  You may be wondering why there are pictures of the cookies still in saran wrap, and the answer is that once the event starts happening, I don’t ever remember to take pictures, so I try to take pictures of as many things as possible right before everybody arrives.  Maybe one day I’ll master the art of blogging about your party, but until then, you’ll just have to see it like it is.

By the time I got home for Christmas this year, my mom already had all of the name tags made and ready to go.  (Christmas Eve was at Aunt Mary’s, Christmas Day was at my house.)  She found these incredibly adorable acorn ornaments (apparently my family has something about acorns…) at TJMaxx/Homegoods/Marshalls and attached a nametag to place each person’s name.  My job when I got home was to write on them.  (Apparently my mother really likes my handwriting.)  Check out her awesome work!!

Stay tuned for Christmas Day, part two: The Shrimp Cocktail.
