So.  Yes, my birthday was December 30.  Yes, my birthday PARTY was January 28th.  And YES, it is now April.  However, I didn’t get around to writing thank you notes until March… better late than never right?

I decided to pull a classic Chrystina and go with the Post Card approach.  Put some pictures of the party on one side, write a message on half of the other side AND you only have to pay for a postcard stamp (which is now 33 cents, thank you, America).  I didn’t have any pictures from the event though, so I decided to try something different.  Johanna brought a dessert to this party that we ended up calling “crack”.  It was SO good. It’s sort of caramel meets chocolate meets matzo… and it’s bite-sized.

I hope you appreciate that I used my blog background as the background of this card.  The colors are just too good to pass up.
Also, I’ve only got one comment so far from a friend that somebody that they lived with was slightly confused that they got a recipe for crack in the mail (that seemed to be more like toffee).

When’s the last time you sent somebody a postcard?

While I’m still waiting to find time to do anything with the pictures from the weekend, let me tell you about my St. Patrick’s Day.

I woke up early to work on cards (surprised?).  I called my mother on a walk to Center City.  She told me that she was making corn beef and cabbage (the longest word you seem to be able to spell using music notes – cabbage that is).  I met up with Julia at noon to look at a new apartment (which was gorgeous, but I would be paying the same cost as I am now for a smaller amount of space).  Then I had some time to kill before I met up with Carly and Sha’nele for brunch at Varga Bar.

Alright, now you know a lot of random facts – some of which are important, some of which aren’t important.  Now, what the heck does this have to do with Chef Jacquie?

I was kind of sad about not being able to have my mother’s corn beef and cabbage, but I went on with my day anyway.  While I was killing time, I happened to walk into Williams Sonoma.  I walked in and a lady behind the counter said hello and asked how I was doing.  Then she asked if I wanted some soup – bacon, potato and cabbage soup.  Of COURSE I want some bacon, potato and cabbage soup.  I took a little cup to try, and it was DELICIOUS.  AND she had recipe cards made up already so I could take one for the road.

This recipe also happens to be the featured recipe on her website currently, which you can find HERE.  (I make no promises on that link being Erin Go Brah Soup beyond the next few days.)

I told her that her soup was incredible and that I actually just talked to my mother and was sad that I couldn’t have her corn beef and cabbage, but this sort of made up for it.  She smiled and told me that she wasn’t my mother, but she was somebody’s mother, and she had made me soup.  It was pretty much just the perfect response.

After circling the store, I ended up coming back to her – telling her she pretty much made my day (in those words) and then asked her if I could blog about this experience – to which she (obviously) said yes.  I’m glad she said yes so quickly and willingly because I’m still at that point in my life where I feel awkward asking people about blogging – I’m working on it.

Here she is – - -

Check out her website – she does culinary tours in Philadelphia (one is the taste of The Avenue and the other is the taste of the Italian Market) – definitely considering going on one, foodie events, answers questions about food and more!

Thanks again, Chef Jacquie!

Look at that alliteration.

During my 9th Annual Christmas Party (recently mentioned), I made a pepperoni dip that my friend Madison introduced me to.  Once the dip is made, you put it in a breadbowl.  This was my first breadbowl experience.

I dove right into cutting this thing apart.  I used a knife to cut into the top and then I started pulling out the inside in bite-sized pieces.  I soon discovered there wasn’t really a way to do it WRONG, but there probably is a way to do it most efficiently.  Don’t get me wrong, this way worked – I ended up with bite-sized pieces of bread, but they weren’t pretty, or remotely close to the same size and I sort of felt like I was putting my hands all over everybody else’s food.  (Sorry to everybody at the party)

SO – what would I do differently next time?  I would try to actually cut out as much of the bread as possible.  I’ve read on a few websites now that the initial cut should be 1″ from the outside edge of the bread all the way around on the top about 3/4 of the way down and then you use the knife to cut the core out.  Once the center is removed, then you can CUT the bread into bite sized pieces instead of ripping it and if you need to rip some specific parts out later, so be it.

Want to know how I know this is the right way to cut bread?  I found it on ehow.com.

Over Thanksgiving break I threw my Annual Christmas Party – which we’ve OFFICIALLY decided was the 9th Annual Christmas Party – which means something pretty epic is going to have to happen next year at the 10th Annual Christmas Party.  I’ve been throwing this party since I was 14, isn’t that crazy?  Anyway – each year we make it a cookie swap, so I thought that I’d share with you the AWESOME cookies that we shared.  Of course, my parents are on a diet, so I couldn’t leave the cookies there and of course, I was leaving for Baton Rouge the next morning, so OF COURSE I took three dozen cookies to Baton Rouge this week.  (& TSA didn’t try to stop me, woo hoo!)  If anybody wants any recipes, let me know and I’ll see if I can hunt them down for you.  What a good excuse to leave a comment, huh?  ;)
