Yes it seems unusual to have an entire blog post devoted to shrimp. This was a pretty big deal though. There was a lot of thought and a lot of preparation work that went into this. First we had to decide which glass we were going to put the shrimp into.
We decided on option 1. We decided this on Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas Day morning we went and made it all sorts of fancy – added some lettuce to the bottom of the cup, put the cocktail sauce in. And this is something you can absolutely do ahead of time as long as you have a fridge to put it in so that when your final guest arrives you can just pull them out and automatically start serving. Of course, the fridge was full, so we put them in the sun room (ironic how it’s cold in the winter, huh?). I’ve got to tell you, they complemented the room pretty well, I was impressed.
Now, would we do it this way again? I’ve got to tell you, I think the answer is no. Making individual plates and doing them ahead of time worked out awesome, however, the choice of “dish” probably wasn’t the best choice. One of the cups got knocked over (because it was so tall) and got cocktail sauce all over the white tablecloth, and I saw a lot of people stretching to reach the top of the glass (because the chairs were so low). All in all though, 10/10 for appearance, maybe only 6/10 for functionality.
Stay tuned for Christmas Day, part three: Table Settings.
