A Greeting Card Story: Engagement, Thinking of You, and Baby Boy Congratulations

Today we continue the story of the final three of six greeting cards. (Click here for the first three if you missed them.) This time instead of two thank yous and a you go girl card, I made an engagement party card for a friend from high school, a thinking of you card for a friend from Baton Rouge, and a congratulations on your baby boy card for one of my co-workers.

As per usual, I started by choosing three embellishments that I was excited to work with. A moon and stars for the new baby card, a cupcake for the engagement party, and three-dimensional floral design stickers for the thinking of you card.

Then I found paper to compliment the embellishments to be the base of the card. I apologize for the horrible-ness of this photograph. That paper in the bottom left is actually reflective silver, which made things complicated. Once I cut it down the photos got much better. I went with neutrals for the very bright cupcake to keep it classy; a fun, bold pattern for the thinking of you card; and my favorite yellow patterned paper for the baby boy card. You’ll notice that I thought it was a good idea to cut the paper by-hand and then ended up with a moderately awful shape. Don’t worry, that gets fixed later.

After choosing the paper I made the base of each card. It always makes it a little bit easier to see what it’s actually going to turn out like.

Then I took out the white gel pen (one of my top 3 pens) to add some embellishments to the engagement card. I decided I really liked the floral card the way it was. And I finally fixed up the edges of the moon card. Once I did that, it required making the whole card a little bit less wide, which is totally fine. The actual width and height of my cards always change multiple times during the process. The only thing to make sure of is that it’s going to fit in the envelope.

I learned my lesson from the first “thank you card” in the last set. Don’t write directly on the paper. (Either that or I’m going to just add it to my “things to learn how to do” list, kind of like make flower arrangements, but that’s the story of another post.) So I got out a white sheet of paper to write on for both the engagement card and the baby boy card.

Much better, right? Also. You’ll totally notice that I originally wrote congratulations on the engagement card and then realized that because it was for the bride I was supposed to write best wishes, so the final version actually has “best wishes” written on it instead.
