Easy Watercolor Flowers

You may remember from my bridal shower questions cards post that one of the options that I almost used was to make water color flowers on each of the cards.  After trying it, I decided that it was a little bit too delicate for the question cards, but I knew that I loved the technique and how easy it was, so I decided to use it on the bridal shower card.  I was really surprsied about how easy it was to execute, and there’s pretty much no way to screw up.  (Love things like that.)

The first step is to take out your watercolors.

Second, make a bunch of color blobs for flowers, varying how dark and light they are – some of them can even have a dark center.  The best part is the blobs don’t need to be any consistent shape – just blobby.  (I like the word blob in case you haven’t picked up on that yet.)

Then go back through and add some light green lines for the stems.  I found that I liked starting with a very light stem and adding color as necessary so that the green didn’t overpower the pink in the final product.  It’s really easy to layer the colors.  Also – the leaves are just blobs that are a little more angular.

Once you have finished putting all of the color on, take a black pen and outline the flowers to make them pop a little bit more.  This takes a little bit more finness since you’re defining the shapes of the flowers an the leaves – but honestly, any kind of squiggles will work.

Also, I found that it was easiest to use paper that was a little bit thicker.  Mine had a texture on it as well, which added a little bit to the final product.

Well, there you have it – how to use squiggles and blobs to make a pretty watercolor flower card.  I loved getting the change to pull out my watercolors again, it’s definitely been too long.  I think there may be some roof deck sunset painting in my future.
