12: Career Conversations
In Episode 12 I talk with a friend from work, Priyal Shah, about an activity we just recently completed. After listening to Episode 5 of the Radical Candor podcast about how to have Career Conversations as a step towards being a better boss, I realized this would be a good activity to do in a group of colleagues as well as just one-on-one. We scheduled a month's worth of after hours meetings to have life conversations, discuss our visions and dreams, and build a career action plan.
In this conversation we discuss what we did, what worked well, what we would change for next time, and some of the benefits we got from completing the activity.
This week was the first week that felt normal for me, or as normal as you can feel during times of social distancing. I had some time to relax after work hours, some time to clean out my email, and some time to continue to figure out how to be a better ally. I'm hoping this continues and I have more time to continue to work my way through my inbox and continue to help make good change in the world.
Podcast News:
I'm still playing week by week to see what I will be recording next. I think this works great right now because trying to figure out what the world will look like two weeks from now seems nearly impossible. Suggestions for new episodes are still welcome. I'm currently brainstorming both how to raise kids in the city (as previously mentioned) and how to better store digital photos.
Self-Improvement of the Week:
I continue to record my actions towards how I'm becoming a better ally in my previous blog post, to follow along with that journey, please click and scroll to the bottom of the post. I've also joined a book club at work to discuss White Fragility.
I emailed all of my coachees at work to see who would be interested in hosting a "Toastmasters" event where we all present to each other in order to improve our presentation skills. About 8 people have said yes. This week I need to send out the email with the details.
I (finally) started to make headway on sorting thorugh my digital files. They are mostly photos and I've had them stored on Dropbox for the past 5 or so years. I think I'm going to be moving everything over to Google Photos to keep it all together and make the photos more searchable. I also have an external hard drive of all the files. I'm hoping to talk with friends to see how they store their photos - and to see if anybody has come up with a good way to display / enjoy them.
I hope you're having a good week and your family is staying safe and doing well during these crazy times. I'd love to hear what you're working on this week as well! Feel free to share in the comments below.
