05: Learning Languages While Traveling

This week, Episode 5 launched, which is all about learning languages while traveling. During this episode I talk with my friend and co-worker Adriel about her experience learning languages - which involves attending Spanish learning schools in Spanish-speaking countries. We also talk through which other forms of media she is using to continue her Spanish education. Such a fun conversation, and she's definitely inspired me to look into Spanish learning school. Episode 6 will be about my journey trying to be healthier in my food habits (launching March 1) and Episode 7 will be all about maintaining friendships with special guest Justin Shiels (launching March 15). I cannot wait to share them with you.

"Things I'm Working On" topics from the week:

  • I spent three days at a work strategy brainstorming session. Conversations like that can really get you started thinking about what your personal and professional brands are and how you can dive deeper into them. As I put together my business case to get promoted this year, I'm going to really need to spend some time solidfying the vague plans I've already put in place.

  • Saturday was a girls day with friends from college. We spent the day swapping updates with each other and sharing things that the other people must check out. This list includes everything from Netflix documentaries to personality tests to jewelry sites to beauty products. It is now in a google sheet and will be updated at every future meet-up. This reminded me of what Gaby Dunn from Bad With Money said about creating a shared Google Doc of all of the knowledge and strengths of the people in your community so that if somebody needs help with contracts, or design, or reorganizing a closet, you know who to call.

  • I added two questions to my icebreaker list that I saw a friend post about on LinkedIn - "what TV sitcom family would you most like to join?" and "what's the scariest thing you've ever done for fun?" (Once a resident assistant (RA), always an RA.)

  • I'm proud that I had people over this weekend instead of going out to grab beverages in them. The wine in my basement is cheaper than the bar and the tea in my cabinet is cheaper than a coffee shop. Seems like a simple way to avoid spending quite as much money while still getting the same output.

Show Notes:

In this episode, I talked with my friend Adriel Barrett-Johnson about her experience learning spanish and how she accelerated the process by attending spanish learning schools in other countries. I ask about the logistics, how to find the best schools, and what the general setup is. We also spend some time talking about other forms of media that she has used to learn spanish along the way.
