Episode 7: On Friendship

Honestly folks, what is the world these days?

In the midst of all of this social distancing and quarantining, I've got just the episode for you, Episode 7. This is the one where Justin Shiels and I talk about staying in touch with people in our lives. So if you're in need of a bit of information (or maybe some systems to put in place?) this one's for you.

What a week. I managed to memorize the entire promotion pitch, still complete a 55 hour work week from the comfort of my own home, and tried very hard not to go into full panic mode thinking about the current state of the universe. That's really what I'm working on, trying to figure out how to not take the entire world's problems onto my own shoulders, but to just be the best version of myself that I can be right now. It's harder than it sounds. So far what seems to be working is watching The Bold Type, and having a drink at the end of a long day. Alternative (healthier) suggestions are welcome.

I also removed twitter and facebook from my phone so I cannot just endlessly scroll through news during the day.

Podcast News

  • I have two more episodes of this recorded to share with you all and can't wait. I also, however, can't wait to keep thinking about what this podcast is going to look like beyond there. At the beginning of the year I wrote down 30 possible topics for the year, but I want to make sure that whatever content I'm creating is relevant to things I'm working on right now. I think that will make it most impactful for both you and me. (That said, topic suggestions are always welcome.)

  • I was |-----| (<that) close to having the website up and running this week. It was live for a few minutes today and then crashed. Looking forward to sharing it all with you when it becomes available.

Self-Improvement Inspiration From the Week:

  • In reading a Nice Work newsletter (a newsletters for feminists at work), written by Sara and Katel of Active Voice and Collective Strength, there was a section talking about how you should keep track of the questions you're asking at work, what reactions you're getting, and how often you're getting the answers that you want. The thought is to replace the "why [do I have to do that]" question with something more poignant like, "what can I do to prepare for this call?" I look forward to tracking this during the upcoming weeks and seeing how I can improve my own question-asking at the office.

  • Everyone seems to be moving to virtual events. I've been invited to virtual happy hours, virtual coffee breaks, and virtual game-playing sessions. Jackbox games has been a lifesaver. And I learned that our Boston office played BINGO on a call this week. I'm loving how creative people are being with this. Any other great suggestions you've heard?

  • This week I'm going to try to be much more mindful of my working time so I've downloaded an app to track my time to make sure that I'm estimating it correctly at the end of the day. Looking forward to see where all the hours are really going and to figure out how to group together similar activities to be more efficient. I will report back on how this goes.

Stay safe everyone. And stay healthy.

Thank goodness for the internet.
